November of Thanksgiving 17

Today it’s cold and a little blizzardy. I’m thankful for my trusty vehicle and my snow tires. I’m thankful for the opportunity and ability to shovel some snow, which is one of the outdoor jobs that I really like to do. Especially at the beginning of winter.

You can get this button from Lisa of Lisa NotesLately I’ve been thinking about the Trinity in preparation for this week’s theological term. (No, I’m not going to tell you what the term is and ruin the surprise.) Last week I posted that I was thankful for the Trinity, and there was more I wanted to say, but I ran out of time. (Writing even a couple of sentences about the Trinity is time-consuming, at least for me, because it’s a difficult concept, and I could go wrong in so many ways when I say something about it. And we can’t have that, can we?) So here are a few more reasons I’m thankful that God is triune.

• Not only does the Trinity, and only the Trinity make it possible for us to be saved, because only a divine Saviour can provide atonement for us; but also, our complete salvation requires a divine intercessor, and, thankfully, the second person of the Trinity “always lives to make intercession” for us. 
• We can know God better because he is triune. No one has (or can) see God, “but the only God who is at the Father’s side”—the Son—“he has made him known” to us by coming to us and living among us as a human being like us. There is someone who is “the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature” who can and has made the ultimate revelation of God.
• Because God is Trinity he can be personal. What God is, he must exist as in himself, outside of creation. If God is personal, then he must have real relationships in himself, and as Trinity, he does.

There are probably a million other reasons to be thankful for the Trinity. Can you think of any?

I’m also thankful for the thermostat with a timer that turns the furnace up before I step out from under the covers. I’m thankful, too, for my morning cup of coffee and everthing else that helps keep me warm in the winter.
