Painting the Deck
The reason I’ve been blogging less these days? I’ve been scraping, sanding, washing, priming and painting one of the decks. This is a big deck, a foot on three sides less than the size of the living room, to be exact. It’s been a big job, but with a little touch up later today, I’ll be done.
Originally, the plan was to put a hot tub on that deck, but we never got around to it. But it’s a very good place to watch the sunset or keep track of everything that goes on in the neighbours’ backyards.

You did a good job on your desk. I like it.
Looks great! Now all it needs is the new picnic table you hauled up last summer!!
Six days, the Deckote says, before it can heavy furniture on it. And that picnic table is HEAVY furniture.
We did our deck this summer, too, and it was very hot when we did it!
Yours looks very nice!
I bet your arms and hands are sore...
The deck looks great.
Enjoy those sunsets...
Absolutely gorgeous!
Thanks for showing us a piece of your world!
Somehow though, hard labor on a job well done is refreshing to the soul. That probably goes back to Genesis where we will earn our bread by our sweat.
Congratulations on completing your summer's "hard labor."
Ah, we too, will have to redo our deck soon. I live down the street from you, I believe, so you might have noticed that our house has gone from (ugh) pink to dark green. However, the decks are still pink, which will soon require rectifying.
So, since decks are notoriously difficult to maintain, would you mind sharing with me what product you decided to use?
Hi Fawn,
Ah yes, I was walking by with the dog one night when the girls were painting and the guys were supervising. :) The green is very nice, and so much better than the pink.
The floor of the deck is Deckote. The key, I think, is putting on a good layer of Deckote primer and then two coats of the paint. The old Deckote floor (that I scraped and sanded) lasted about 10 years, which is not bad when the conditions are as extreme as they are on that deck.
The railings are Olympic Fence and Siding Stain. I'm not sure if that works over another colour or not.
Happy painting.
Thanks! We don't really have railings on our deck - they've got the same siding as the rest of the house, though we may change that down the road, too, to open up the space - so we'll just paint that the same as the walls. I just know that horizontal surfaces can be difficult because off all the rain and traffic exposure, so since you've had good experience with it, I'll have to look into the Deckote!
We planned to install eavestroughs earlier this summer, but our plans were foiled by a lack of proper materials, so we'll try again in the fall when my BIL comes back to do some more work on the house. The rain falling straight down off the roof definitely did not do any good to the last coat of colour on the decks.
Stop by and introduce yourself sometime! :) We can always put on a pot of tea or let the dogs romp together.
just wondering...I have a very small patio, I sanded then put a layer of primer on and then one coat of colour...primer and colur were deckote...do you think that is enough...you mention two coats, do you think it would really make that much of a difference?
thanks for your help,
michelle
I don't know for sure, but deckote is a whole system and you need to follow the instructions for it to work the way it's supposed to. Do the instructions call for a second coat?
