Gas Up: July 17

July%2010

Gas prices at my neighbourhood gas station are exactly the same this week as last—$1.479/litre.

I suppose you want me to figure out how much that is per gallon in US dollars, right? That’s $5.64 Canadian for 3.89 litres or 1 US gallon, and the currency is pretty close to par—$1 Canadian is worth $0.9932, which makes the price of 1US gallon of gasoline at my local Fas Gas cost around $5.60 US.*

Dorothy  has already posted the price of gasoline in Crystal Lake, IL.

Now it’s your turn to let us know where you’re from and what you pay for gas.

If only [Kansas] had a mountain or two and no tornadoes, it’d be the perfect place to live.

Nope, no mountains. But we do have most of what's left of North America's tallgrass prairie. And it's breathtaking in its own right -- well, to me, anyway.

As for the tornados, I'll take them over earthquakes any day. And, of course, my relatives in California feel just the opposite. I suppose it's a perfect example of the familiar vs the unfamiliar.

I lived in the Caribbean for several years as a small child, then work brought my parents here. And I got to do more than my fair share of traveling from high school through college (the passport book had stamps from about two dozen countries on both sides of the Atlantic by my 21st birthday). No, it won't ever win any Condé Nast awards, but it's home. And I expect that it always will be. So, call me crazy; it won't be the first time. :-)

For me, at any rate, home really is where the heart is.

My dad is from western Kansas and we like to tease him about his love for the flatlands. When we took our car trips to visit the relatives, the flatter the land got, the more excited he got. That's the origin of my "mountain or two" comment. I do love being surrounded by mountains, but there's something about being able to see the grain elevators of a town miles and miles away.

On my honeymoon, we stopped in western Kansas to see the relatives. When we left them, we were down to our last $10. Driving east (to MN) we were listening to the radio warnings about all the tornadoes behind us. We were camping, and with only $10.00, we weren't going to be staying in any motels. So we had to keep driving late into the night till we turned north and the weather got better. We paid $5.00 to camp, and then the next day we bought $2.50 worth of gas and spent the other $2.50 on eggs, toast, hashbrowns and coffee. We got home that night hungry and broke. Anyway, that's my Kansas tornado story.

(Oh, and somewhere in that time outrunning tornadoes, we turned north at a sign that pointed the way to Minneapolis, only to find out that it wasn't Minneapolis, Minnesota we were headed toward.)

$3.69 as of this morning. It will be interesting to see if it shoots up tomorrow. We're due for a price spike any day now.
