Being Thankful on November 12

Tonight I’m thankful for electricity. We had one of our too-frequent power outages this afternoon, and it was fine until the daylight started to dim and it grew darkish in the house. Then I began to worry that I might be stuck eating a cold sandwich for supper and sitting by myself in a cold, dark house all evening.

So I took the dog for a long walk. Returning home, I could see light from the lamp in the window. Yes! I had a hot supper cooked in a light-filled kitchen. Now I’m watching the news and blogging. Life is good.

Electricity is a good gift from a good God.

I’m celebrating good gifts from God during the month of November and hoping you’ll be thankful for your good gifts, too. Here’s how you can join in the thanksgiving and even, perhaps, get something material from it. If you’ve posted something you’ve posted something you’ve expected me to include and you don’t see it on the list, please let me know. I do miss things sometimes.

Being Thankful on November 10

Peasants Lifting Potatoes
Vincent Van Gogh
I’m thankful for my garden potatoes. Potatoes take very little work to grow, and the taste payoff is big. I had one of my garden potatoes baked for supper and I really enjoyed it. A bonus benefit from garden potatoes is that their skins are so tender that they don’t need to be peeled—ever. I don’t even peel them to make mashed potatoes and no one’s complained yet. In fact, they say they like their mashed potatoes better that way. So I thank God for providing potatoes for us, and the sun, rain, and soil to grow them.

What are you thankful for?

Being Thankful on November 9

I’m thankful for God’s word, the Bible.

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be competent, equipped for every good work. (2 Timothy 3:14-17 ESV)

It’s through scripture that we know Christ. It’s through scripture that we know that salvation is found in him alone. It’s through scripture that we know what God desires of us.

I’m thankful that like Timothy, I have been acquainted with the scripture since childhood. Being trained in the scripture was like eating and sleeping in my home. When I was a child, I assumed that every other Christian home was like mine, but I’ve learned in adulthood what a rare thing it was.

(That photo, by the way, is of my Grandpa Vogt, but you old-timers already knew that.)
